Family of slain Israeli Olympian gets his ID card

Eliezer Halfin was murdered by Palestinians at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Jerusalem: After a four-decade wait, the family of an Israeli athlete murdered by Palestinians at the 1972 Munich Olympics has received his ID card.

Eliezer Halfin was among 11 Israeli Olympic athletes killed in the terrorist attack. A German police officer recovered the card and held on to it until his death. Israeli officials say the officer`s son recently found the card and delivered it to the Israeli embassy in Berlin.

German diplomats presented the card to Halfin`s sister at a ceremony in Jerusalem on Wednesday.

During the Munich attack, Palestinian militants raided the rooms of Israeli athletes at the Olympics, killing two of them and taking nine hostage.

A fumbled rescue attempt by German police resulted in the deaths of the other Israelis in a shootout.
