Johannesburg: At least five people were injured Thursday when several gun shots were fired by unidentified men in a popular mall in South Africa`s Bedforview town, a media report said.

It was not immediately clear what happened, but emergency services company Netcare 911 said that five people were wounded, with two in critical condition, Eyewitness News reported.

"As I came out of the toilet I just saw people firing guns. A lady came past me and she was shot in the crossfire. Three people were shot. I think it was a robbery," it quoted an eyewitness as saying.

A woman said there was a group of men who shot people. "I don`t know what they robbed but there are still gun shots going off. It`s chaos."

Police and emergency services reached the mall and barricaded the roads leading to it.

Bedforview is 40 km east of Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.
