Pensacola: A county jail in Florida collapsed partially after a gas explosion, killing at least two inmates and injuring more than a hundred others, including the jail officers, reports said.
The incident took place at Florida`s Escambia County Jail late Wednesday night at 11 pm and over 600 inmates were said to be present at the time of the explosion, said Kathleen Castro, a spokeswoman for the county.
Over 100-150 inmates and correctional officers were injured, and two deaths were confirmed.
About 600 prisoners were in the building at the time, the county sheriff`s office said.
Castro didn`t know if flooding in the area was a factor but says the jail did get extensive flooding during heavy rains that drenched the region Tuesday and Wednesday.
The injured were brought to hospitals and the uninjured inmates were brought to jails in neighbouring counties, Castro said.
Search and rescue operations were underway on Thursday and authorities had completed two sweeps of the building.
