Former US president Jimmy Carter has arrived in North Korea, according to Chinese state media, on a visit aimed at easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Beijing: Former US president Jimmy Carter has arrived in North Korea, according to Chinese state media, on a visit aimed at easing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The official Xinhua news agency reported his arrival in Pyongyang but gave no further details.

Carter, accompanied by a delegation of other retired state leaders, was in Beijing earlier and also plans to go to Seoul on a six-day tour that aims to discuss issues including denuclearisation and food shortages in North Korea.
