Vienna: Austrian construction workers on Thursday began filling in with concrete a cellar where the notorious Josef Fritzl kept his daughter prisoner for 24 years and fathered seven children with her.
Walter Anzboeck, the lawyer appointed as administrator of Fritzl`s assets, confirmed a report in the Kronen Zeitung daily, saying the operation in Amstetten, 100 kilometres west of Vienna, would take up to two weeks.
According to the Kronen Zeitung, two holes would be drilled in the ceiling and cement pumped down into the former dungeon where Elisabeth Fritzl and her children were imprisoned.
The ordeal ended in April 2008 when the oldest child, then 19, was hospitalised, and a media call was made for the child`s mother, bringing the whole tragic story to light. The case attracted worldwide attention.
Fritzl was found guilty in 2009 of murder over the death of one of Elisabeth`s babies, as well as incest, sequestration and 3,000 instances of rape, and was jailed for life.
The fate of the "House of Horrors" has long been a topic of debate, with authorities initially concerned it may become a gruesome tourist attraction.
Fritzl`s lawyer said in 2011 that a precondition of any sale of the building, which Fritzl owns, would be to fill in the basement.
