Abuja: A local chief was on Friday shot dead and
another person injured in a northern Nigerian town by
motorcycle-borne assailants, suspected to be members of an
Islamic sect blamed for a series of attacks in the region.
Abba Mukhtar was killed by two gunmen near his home in
the town of Maiduguri, Borno state police commissioner Lawal
Abdullahi said, adding another person was seriously injured
during the attack.
"The two men on motorbike then escaped in a hurry after
accomplishing their mission," Abdullahi said, adding that
Boko Haram sect was being suspected in this attack as it had
threatened to kill politicians and security agents.
He said the gunmen triggered panic among residents and
onlookers by firing several shots in the air before escaping.
The Islamic Boko Haram sect is seeking establishment of
the Sharia system of adjudication and government in Nigeria.
It also despises western education.
Boko Haram was earlier offered an amnesty by the
Governor-elect of Borno State but the group, which has claimed
responsibility for several bombings in the north including in
the oil-rich African country`s capital of Abuja, rejected it.
