Heavy rains bring relief to drought-hit China Beijing: Heavy rains Sunday lashed the drought-hit regions of southern China, bringing relief to thousands of people who have been battling a severe drought condition for several months, weather officials said.

The rains are expected to continue over the next two days, Xinhua reported quoting meteorological authorities.

The National Meteorological Centre (NMC) has forecast heavy rains and storm in parts of the southern Chinese provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang and Fujian.

Parts of Hunan, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces received more than 100 mm of rain since it started Saturday.

The rains will ease the drought plaguing the lower and middle parts of the Yangtze river basin, said experts. They also warned of possible mountain floods.

Sunny weather will persist in the country's north, the NMC said.
