Holbrooke backs US alert to travellers in Europe

Paris: US special envoy for Afghanistan
and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke says the September 11, 2001
attacks "wouldn`t have happened" if Americans had been warned
to be on the lookout for terrorism beforehand.

Holbrooke was defending a US warning to American
travellers to be vigilant about the terror threat in Europe
which some critics have called too alarmist.

He says "a series of indications" merited the new
warning, but "nobody said, `Cancel your travel plans`."

If a similar warning had been made before 9-11,
Holbrooke said the attacks "wouldn`t have happened because you
would have had more people paying attention."

Holbrooke spoke to reporters today during a trip to
Europe focusing on relief efforts for Pakistan`s floods.
