Honduran drug enforcement chief gunned down

The head of the Honduran drug enforcement agency was killed here by two gunmen, police said.

Tegucigalpa: The head of the Honduran drug enforcement agency was killed here by two gunmen, police said.

Julian Aristides Gonzalez, a retired general, was attacked while driving through the capital`s Guanacaste district, National Police and National Criminal Investigation Agency, or DNIC, spokesperson said.

Gonzalez, who was usually accompanied by a large security detail, was alone when the attack occurred, the police spokesperson said, adding that investigators would determine why no bodyguards were with him at the time of the shooting.

The drug enforcement chief died a day after revealing that drug traffickers had changed the smuggling routes they used from South America.

Small planes, most of them registered in Venezuela and Colombia, frequently land in Honduras with loads of cocaine from South America.
Two planes that arrived in the Central American country last week from Colombia had actually entered Honduran air space from Nicaragua, the media reported Tuesday.
Gonzalez`s death comes amid the political crisis sparked by the June 28 coup that ousted President Mel Zelaya.
