Hong Kong crisis: Student leaders, officials to hold talks today

Hong Kong: In a bid to end the deadlock, student leaders and Hong Kong officials will meet on Tuesday even as the pro-democracy protests entered into its third week.

While Hong Kong leader CY Leung will not attend the talks, five top officials will be present to discuss the situation with the student leaders.

The meeting is expected to take place in the evening and will be aired live.

Screens will be put up in the protest zones to enable protesters to see the talks.

Meanwhile, a day ahead of the talks, Leung, while giving an interview, had said that the protests are now “out of hand for the people who started it, for people who planned it, for people (who) scripted it," the CNN reported.

The charges were denied by the students leaders.

Parts of Hong Kong have been paralysed after thousands of protesters took to streets to demand complete democracy in the upcoming elections to be held in 2017.

Presently, China allows candidates who have been screened by a committee, comprising loyalists, to fight the elections.
