Hurricane Amanda regains force, still no threat

Hurricane Amanda unexpectedly regained some strength today, but remained far off Mexico`s Pacific coast and posed no threat to land.

The hurricane`s maximum sustained winds were hitting 195 kph this morning, making it a Category 3 storm. But the US National Hurricane Center said weakening is expected to resume and Amanda should become a tropical storm by Thursday.

The hurricane was centered about 945 kilometres south- southwest of the southern tip of Mexico`s Baja California peninsula and is moving north-northwest near 9 kph.
