Washington: Facing flak from the Buddhists in the US and across the globe, an American shoe manufacturing company has removed shoes with Buddha images from its website.

The Icon Shoes, with its headquarters in California, did not give any reasons for pulling out the shoes, but the global protest seems to be the reasons for it.

"While removing the ill-conceived shoes from the online catalogue is a welcome first step, Icon shoes can really respect Buddhist tradition by committing not to produce or sell such shoes, now or in the future," Bhuchung Tsering, from the International Campaign for Tibet, said.

Last week, Tibetans and Bhutanese Buddhists had written to Icon Shoes to express their disgust.

They have not only flooded the company`s Facebook page, but also are calling the company.

The North American member of the Tibetan Parliament, Tashi Namgyal, also sought off an angry letter to Icon Shoe.

Based out of Palm Desert, California, ICON was launched in 1999 by a Hollywood filmmaker and art collector.
