Toronto: Indo-Canadians have congratulated
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper for his victory in the
recent parliamentary elections and hoped that the new
government would accelerate bilateral cooperation between the
two countries.
The vice-chairman of Canada-India Education Council, Kam
Rathee said that Harper`s victory would give four years of
uninterrupted ramping up of Canada-India business relations.
He said "the conservatives are pragmatic political and
business leaders, there will be more business action."
Salim Momin, a noted legal professional, said that the
Harper government should step-up efforts to strengthen
economic ties with India.
The ruling conservative party, which missed the majority
mark in 2006 and 2008, won 167 seats in the 308-member House
of Commons. Several Indo-Canadian MPs, including former
Canadian health minister Ujjal Dosanjh, Canada`s first Sikh MP
Ruby Dhalla, longest-serving Indo-Canadian MP Gurbax Malhi,
Navdeep Bains and Sukh Dhaliwal lost their seats.
The 41st parliament will have eight Indo-Canadian MPs
against nine in the outgoing House.
Rathee said that the Conservative party would commit
resources to the tune of USD 10 million or so as enunciated by
the Liberal Party in their manifesto in the strengthening of
the Canada-India education corridor.
