Jakarta: Indonesia authorities on Monday raised alert to highest level for the Mount Sinabung volcano in North Sumatra as it continued to emit hot gas into the air.

Mount Sinabung, which has been erupting on and off since September, shot ash and rocks far into the air on Saturday and Sunday.

National Disaster Management Agency ordered residents of 17 villages to evacuate the area and seek refuge in shelters. Thousands of people left their home overnight, taking the number of those fled to 15,000.

Airlines have also been cautioned not to fly near the site.

The volcanology agency raised the alert level for the volcano to the highest level which means hazardous eruption is under way.

National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the government is asking the people to evacuate the place. No casualty has been reported since the volcano began erupting in September.
