Muscat: Tension with Iran and the terror threat in Yemen will be prime topics as US Defence Secretary Robert Gates meets on Sunday with leaders of Oman.
Oman has served as an intermediary in negotiations with Iran, including successful mediation in October that led to the release of an American hiker held for more than a year.
The visit comes against the backdrop of the recent WikiLeaks release of a quarter million sensitive diplomatic documents, many underscoring the Arab world`s anxiety about Tehran and its nuclear ambitions.
The documents detail pleas from Arab leaders for action against Iran.
Equally worrisome is Yemen, Oman`s neighbour to the west, where an al Qaeda group is plotting attacks against the West.
