Israel: Israel claimed victory Tuesday in blocking a Palestinian bid to join the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).
The body`s annual conference decided Tuesday to suspend the Palestinian bid, instead appointing an advisor to review the application and report back at the 2017 conference.
Membership bids from Kosovo and the Solomon Islands were also put on hold.
The Palestinians had been seeking to get their membership ratified at the annual meeting, which is being held on the Indonesian island of Bali.
"The Israeli ministry of foreign affairs together with the Israeli police... carried out an intensive global effort to thwart the Palestinian initiative," a foreign ministry statement said.
"This vote is an accomplishment and a triumph of Israeli diplomacy, reflecting the positive change in Israel`s standing in the international arena," it added.
The Lyon-based Interpol currently has 190 member countries, enabling police across the globe to share information.
Palestine gained observer status at the United Nations in 2012 and since then has joined 54 international organisations and agreements, according to the Palestinian foreign ministry.
Among them are the International Criminal Court and the United Nations heritage body UNESCO.
Israel has opposed such moves, delaying payments of taxes to the Palestinians after their 2015 ICC application.
