Rome: Italy's lower house of Parliament has elected a centre-left candidate as its new leader, and now waits for the Senate to choose one so that talks can begin on forming a government for the eurozone's third-largest economy.

Laura Boldrini, a former spokeswoman in Italy for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, won 327 votes on Saturday to secure a majority in the lower house. The Senate, meanwhile, failed to elect its leader in a third round of voting.

Parliament convened yesterday for the first time since a February election that gave no party a clear victory. The stalemate has raised the possibility of new election, boding badly for Italy's efforts to pass tough reforms needed to snuff out its economic crisis.
