Italy’s President to quit over political deadlock?

As efforts to forge a new governing coalition in Italy failed after weeks of deliberations, President Giorgio Napolitano is mulling to resign to facilitate re-election, reports said Saturday.

Rome: As efforts to forge a new governing coalition in Italy failed after weeks of deliberations, President Giorgio Napolitano is mulling to resign to facilitate re-election, reports said Saturday.

The report comes a day after another round of discussions between President and party leaders met a dead end.

Napolitano`s office said yesterday that the head of state was taking more time to find a way out of the impasse. Analysts say Napolitano will most likely ask a figure outside of partisan politics to put together a government that can last long enough to enact economic and electoral reform before new elections are called.

Italy has seen five weeks of political deadlock over formation of a new government since the inconclusive elections in February.

Italian Parliament is largely split in three blocs, each without enough seats to govern alone.
