Last chemical weapons destroyed in Syria; work not finished yet, says US

US Department of State on Tuesday said that while the last of the declared chemical weapons have been destroyed, the work in the strife-torn country is far from finished.

Washington: US Department of State on Tuesday said that while the last of the declared chemical weapons have been destroyed, the work in the strife-torn country is far from finished.

The Department further tweeted that the remaining eight per cent of the chemical weapons have been removed, the ongoing crisis in the country still needs to be resolved.

The chemical weapons were being shipped to the sea for their destruction.
The decision to destroy the weapons was taken by the United Security Council in September last year as the battle between the rebels and the Basahar al-Assad government raged.

The work started in January this year and the deadline for the destruction of weapons was decided as June 30, 2014.

The United Nations Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)  was entrusted with the task of destroying 1,000 tonnes of deadly chemical weapons material in Syria.

Around 1400 people were killed in chemical attack were reportedly killed in August last year in Syria.
