Kuala Lumpur: A Malaysian minister has
slapped a defamation lawsuit against an independent blogger
over allegations that he raped his maid and tried to cover up
the case.

Malaysia`s Information, Communications and Culture
Minister Rais Yatim is suing blogger Abdul Mutalib Mohamed
Daud, named as the sole defendant in the suit, Star online
reported today.

A court today set May 6 for case management of the
defamation suit brought out by the minister.

Rais said Abdul Mutalib had published or caused to be
published four defamatory articles in the Sabahkini weblog
with his photograph and false words that were "malicious and
implied he was of unchaste behaviour and loose morals".

In his suit, Rais said the defamatory words portrayed
him as a person "capable of getting the former prime minister
to be involved as abettor in the cover up of the rape".

The minister said in his suit that the "libelous
words" had gravely injured his personal and professional
reputation, nationally and internationally.

In his statement of claim filed on February 10, Rais
said he had been brought into a public scandal and had
suffered considerable embarrassment and distress due to it.

Rais is seeking an injunction compelling the defendant
to remove the defamatory articles of him from the blog, the
paper said.

He is also seeking general, special, aggravated and
punitive damages as well as interests, costs and further
relief deemed fit by court, it said.
