Abuja: Nigeria Police have started investigations after a man carrying bags containing more than 70 dead babies was arrested in Lagos.
The man was arrested with the corpses in a bag in the country`s economic capital, Lagos, and taken to a police station. He was employed by the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) to take the corpses to a cemetery.
The man said on television here that he was normally paid to bury the corps in a cemetery, which ran out of space thereby forcing him to look for alternative place to get rid of the bodies.
"We have started questioning the man and we have also invited the people he claimed were his accomplices but it appears to be a corruption case not human trafficking nor ritual, nor murder," Lagos state police spokesman, Frank Mba told a news agency.
Dead bodies often pose a big problem for hospital mortuaries with little spaces in Lagos and heavy odours often emanate from them to the discomfiture of passers by and people leaving around them.
Meanwhile, some staff of LUTH have been invited for questioning by the police even though most observers see it as a failure on the part of government.
