Moderate 5.8-magnitude quake strikes off Sumatra
Jakarta: A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia`s Sumatra island, the US Geological Survey said today, but there were no tsunami warnings issued.
The undersea quake hit at a depth of 34 kilometres, 158 kilometres southeast of Bengkulu on Sumatra, at 2:20 am (0050 IST) the USGS said.
There were no tsunami warnings in place according to the Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.
