Sydney: An Australian Government list of the country's “significant'' aviation incidents has revealed that Sydneysiders clutching knitting needles presented the most common threat to airport security.
The list, created by the Office of Transport Security, according to The Age, outlines 179 incidents that were graded ''level two'' - serious enough to compromise the safety of a plane, passenger or airport - at airports between January 2009 and February 2010.
Knitting needles were the most common ''weapon'' discovered, though they have since been removed from the federal government's list of prohibited items.
The list also revealed that Sydney was the most likely airport to experience a serious breach, as the site of more than 40 percent of all the incidents.
The document did contain some worrying incidents, however, with airport staff detecting ''chemical, biological or radiological'' substances twice during the 13 months.
