Mother finally learns of Polish president`s death

The twin brother of late Polish president Lech Kaczynski has finally broken the news of his death to their ailing mother.

Warsaw: The twin brother of late Polish
president Lech Kaczynski has finally broken the news of his
death to their ailing mother, more than six weeks after he was
killed in a jet crash, a spokesman said Wednesday.

Elzbieta Jakubiak, a former aide to the late president,
said that Jaroslaw Kaczynski and his sister Marta had informed
their 84-year-old mother Jadwiga yesterday of her son`s death
after doctors said her condition had improved.

"Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Marta Kaczynska are spending as
much time as possible with her at the hospital to mourn the
deaths of Lech and (his wife) Maria," Jubiak told AFP.

"The president`s mother asked about the circumstances of
the disaster and also about the other victims," she added.

Lech Kaczynski and 95 others were killed in an April 10
air crash in Russia, including dozens of senior Polish
military and political figures, as they travelled to Katyn to
pay tribute to thousands of Polish officers executed 70 years
ago on the orders of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, a former prime minister who is a
candidate in the June 20 presidential election to succeed his
brother, had previously told how he had feared informing his
mother about the death of his identical twin, Lech.

"Mom still does not know that Lech is dead. She has been
in a poor mental condition for a long time and has mistaken me
for Lech, something which has never happened before," the
60-year-old told the Superexpress daily last week.

"She is now in better mental condition and in the coming
days I should tell her the truth. I am horribly scared."
