Mubarak discusses Palestine, Iran with Spanish PM Cairo: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday held talks with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero and discussed hosts of issues including the vexed West Asia peace process and Iranian nuclear programme.

The meet tackled various regional and international issues of mutual interest as well as the latest developments in the West Asia peace process and the inter-Palestinian reconciliation.

The meeting between Mubarak and the Zapatero also dealt with Egypt's efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state and the conditions in Iraq, Yemen and Darfur along with the Iranian nuclear file.

The talks covered means of boosting bilateral relations in various domains, especially in the economic field. They reviewed ways of setting up joint ventures in the various spheres, topped by tourism, transportation and railways fields.

Also Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu-al-Ghayt met his Spanish counterpart Miguel Angel Moratinos, who is currently on a visit here.

Their talks dealt with means of enhancing bilateral cooperation in various domains, especially in the economic field, that witnessed a quantum leap in the trade exchange to hit 2.2bn Euros in 2008, a foreign ministry spokesman said.

The two sides also exchanged viewpoints on the impact of the global financial crunch on regional and international conditions.

They also discussed various regional and international issues of mutual interest, the spokesman added. The two top diplomats asserted the necessity of boosting relations between Egypt and the European Union.

Spain will hold the rotating presidency of the EU for the first half of 2010.

Abu-al-Ghayt has posted his Spanish counterpart on the latest developments in the Middle East as well as Egypt's efforts to revive the stalled peace talks, the spokesman said.

Moratinos hailed Egypt's role in maintaining stability in the Middle East.
