Bangkok: Myanmar`s senior general Than
Shwe has stepped down from his position at the head of the
country`s feared military but will remain head of state, a
media report from an exile group said on Friday.

The 77-year-old and his deputy Maung Aye reportedly
resigned from their army posts, according to the Irrawaddy
website.

The move, which could not be immediately confirmed by
official sources in Yangon, comes ahead of Myanmar`s first
elections in two decades set for November 7, which have been
criticised as a sham aimed at putting a civilian mask on the
junta.
