Nairobi: In the aftermath of the deadly Kenya Westgate mall attack, President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered an investigation to probe if the hostage crisis could have been dealt with more efficiently.
President’s probe order comes as many shopkeepers at the Westgate mall complained that their stores had been looted entirely after the attack that claimed 67 lives.
Uhuru Kenyatta said that he would set up a commission of inquiry to see where there were lapses in operations to seize the mall from the terrorists and save those trapped inside, and how officials can avoid them in future.
President announced the investigation at a national inter-religion prayer service held by leaders from the Muslim, Christian and Hindu communities as a tribute the victims of the mall attack.
"We are putting in place a commission of inquiry to see if we could have done things better, to see if there were lapses," Kenyatta said.
He also vowed to keep Kenyan troops in Somalia until that country is stabilised.
The deadly mall siege was claimed by al-Shabab, who said they were retaliating against Kenyan security forces who fought the militants along the UN mission in Somali.
Politicians from parliament`s national security and defence and foreign relations committees visited the mall on Monday afternoon, picking their way through shattered glass and pools of congealed blood in the main hall.
Thirty-nine people are still missing, according to the Red Cross, a week after Kenyan forces brought an end to the four-day bloodbath.
Kenyan and foreign investigators continue to comb the carcass of the mall for clues on the perpetrators and their operating methods.
Asman Kamama, the chairman of the parliamentary joint committee, said the team of lawmakers was expecting to quiz security chiefs on Thursday.
The probe is expected to last several weeks at least.
