Netanyahu urges Abbas not to quit peace talks

Ramallah: Israel`s Prime Minister is urging
the Palestinians not to quit peace talks, after senior
Palestinian politicians linked negotiations to an Israeli
settlement freeze.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the appeal after
the Palestinian leaders closed ranks behind President Mahmoud
Abbas today, saying month-old peace talks cannot continue
unless Israel halts settlement construction. Netanyahu has
refused to do so.

The Israeli prime minister said in a statement that peace
can only be achieved in negotiations.

The Palestinians argue there is no point negotiating
while Israeli settlements gobble up land they want for their
state.

The Obama administration says it will keep trying to find
a solution before a decisive Arab League summit next weekend.
