Beijing: Witnesses report a new protest
has broken out in the western Chinese city of Urumqi, which
was torn by deadly ethnic rioting in July.
People living near the city centre reached by
telephone said hundreds, possibly thousands of members of
China's majority Han ethnic group had gathered downtown to
denounce the regional government and deteriorating law and
order in the city.
Rioting broke out in Urumqi on July 5 among members of
the region's main Uighur ethnic group who targeted Han
residents, killing nearly 200 people and injuring 1,700 more.
Despite officials claims of calm, residents say
tensions remain high, with dozens of people injured in a spate
of stabbings by people wielding hypodermic syringes.
