New York: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal to be the UN's new communications chief and China's Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo to head the UN department of economic and social affairs.
Both will have the rank of undersecretary-general.
UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey also announced yesterday that Shamshad Akhtar, a Pakistani economist who until recently was the World Bank's vice president for the Middle East and Africa, has been appointed an assistant secretary-general in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
