New UN communications and economic chiefs named

UN chief Ban Ki-moon has appointed Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal to be the UN`s new communications chief.

New York: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Peter Launsky-Tieffenthal to be the UN`s new communications chief and China`s Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo to head the UN department of economic and social affairs.
Both will have the rank of undersecretary-general.
UN deputy spokesman Eduardo del Buey also announced yesterday that Shamshad Akhtar, a Pakistani economist who until recently was the World Bank`s vice president for the Middle East and Africa, has been appointed an assistant secretary-general in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
