Nigeria signs prisoner exchange agreement with Britain

 Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Britain on prisoner exchange arrangements and immigration issues, an official said.

Lagos: Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Britain on prisoner exchange arrangements and immigration issues, an official said.

"The MoU would go a long way in fast-tracking the prison reform programmes and the prisoner exchange programme between the two countries," Xinhua quoted Nigeria Minister Abba Moro as saying. 

He said with with the signing of the agreement, some prisons and facilities in the country would be rehabilitated in line with international practice.

The Nigerian minister told reporters that some prisons in Lagos, Ilorin, Ibadan and the Kuje prisons in Abuja were already undergoing rehabilitation under the agreement.

The agreement is meant to allow Nigerians serving jail terms in the Britain and Britons serving jail terms in Nigeria to transfer and serve their sentences in their respective countries.
