Nigerian gubernatorial candidate arrested for riot

Lagos: Nigerian authorities say an opposition gubernatorial candidate has been arrested on murder charges while attending a court hearing in the country`s capital over treason charges.
The arrest on Thursday of John James Akpan Udoedehe, a candidate for governor in Akwa Ibom state, comes only days ahead of the start of Nigeria`s April elections. Udoedehe is a candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, competing against the ruling People`s Democratic Party candidate in the oil-rich state.
A federal police spokesman says Udoedehe`s arrest has nothing to do with politics. Udoedehe`s lawyer disagrees and says the latest arrest will cause the state to "boil into a very serious war”.
