Nine dead in Russian retirement home blaze

The fire at the home was probably caused by short circuit.

Moscow: Nine elderly people were killed and over 450 others rescued when fire swept through a retirement home in Central Russia`s Tver Region in the early hours on Monday.

The fire broke out at 5:05 am (local time) at the home in the town of Vyshni Volochyok, officials said, adding that the blaze was brought under control at 05.30 am.

According to Interfax news agency, the fire was probably caused by short circuit and one room of the retirement home was totally destroyed.

Emergency Situations Ministry spokesperson Elena Smirnykh was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti that nine people were killed and 480 were rescued from the building.

Due to mismanagement and inappropriate financing, state-run social institutions have often become the scenes of tragedy in Russia in the recent years.

In the worst such cases in March 2007, in the blaze in Krasnodar region in south of the country 63 inmates and medical staff of the retirement home were killed.

Three months later, in a similar incident 10 people were killed in a Siberian retirement home.
