Cairo: Egyptian Army on Tuesday killed nine militants and arrested 15 others during security raids in North Sinai region.
The militants were killed in clashes with the armed forces in cities of North Sinai, Ismailia and Al-Dakahlia, a military spokesperson said.
The security forces arrested 15 militants, he added.
The spokesperson said that 11 illegal immigrants were also arrested, including six Egyptians and five Palestinians.
North Sinai has been at the heart of many violent attacks by Islamist militants since the January 2011 revolution that toppled the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.
The military has launched frequent security raids in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses sheltering terrorists. Tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip have also been destroyed during the campaigns.
The attacks targeting police and military have increased substantially after the ouster of former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi from power last year.
