Caracas: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is warning opponents that his socialist government is well prepared to overcome any attempts to destabilise or topple it.

Chavez marked the anniversary of a failed 2002 coup by rallying thousands of supporters and militia troops outside the presidential palace. That two-day coup ended when Chavez returned to power amid giant protests by supporters.

Chavez said his loyalists, the military and government-trained civilian militias would prevent any possible repeat of the coup. He said "nobody ... can topple the revolution."
During his speech on Wednesday, Chavez also vowed to trounce any opposition candidate in next year`s Presidential Election. He said: "We`re going to sweep them away."
