Not thinking much about 2nd term: Obama

US President is instead trying to "keep on pushing" the economy to grow.

Washington: Seventeen months into office, US President Barack Obama says he is not spending much time thinking about his second term, but trying to solve problems that exist and "keep on pushing" the economy to grow.

Obama also said the US economy was expanding but not at a robust enough pace and promised to pay more attention to getting debt and deficits under control.

"I`m not spending a lot of time thinking about a second term. Right now, I`m spending a lot of time thinking about what I got to do next week," Obama told the NBC news in an interview.

Obama assumed office on January 20, 2009 and his four-year tenure will end on January 20, 2013. "The economy is still growing, but it`s not growing as fast as it needs to. I`ve got things right now before Congress that we should move immediately. I`ve said so before I went on vacation, and I`ll keep on saying now that I`m back," he said.

He said the Congress should pass a legislation that helps small businesses get credit, eliminates capital gains taxes so that they have more incentive to invest.

On the high unemployment rate in the country, Obama said "every right" to be frustrated and angry about it.

"They have every right to be frustrated. They have every right to be angry. I think the message that I will continue to deliver in the months ahead and the years ahead is it took us a long time to get into this hole that we`re in.”

"This was the worst economic crisis that we`ve seen in generations. And we are making progress. We are steadily moving forward," he said.

He said the US was now gaining jobs though the economy is not expanding as fast as people would like.

"But it`s moving in the right direction. And the thing we can`t do is to try to go back to the same policies that created this mess in the first place," Obama said.
