Obama calls Mursi ahead of Kerry`s Cairo visit Washington: US President Barack Obama has called up his Egyptian counterpart Muhammad Mursi ahead of American Secretary of State John Kerry's visit to Cairo on March 2.

In his telephonic conversation, Obama welcomed Morsy's commitment to serving as a President for all Egyptians, including women and people of all faiths, a White House statement said yesterday.

The US President also emphasised Morsy's responsibility to protect the democratic principles that the Egyptian people fought hard to secure.

The two leaders also discussed Egypt's economic situation and the importance of implementing reforms that have broad support and will promote long-term growth, said the statement.

"The two Presidents discussed regional security, and President Obama welcomed Egypt's continued role in advancing regional peace and maintaining the ceasefire in Gaza," it added.

John Kerry, during his Egypt visit, will meet with government and opposition leaders, besides members of civil society, to build their democracy strong and promote economic stability and prosperity, the statement said.
