Authorities in China had to cut tap
water supply to 400,000 residents in the central city of
Yiyang after a river source was contaminated by an oil spill.

The move to temporarily cut tap water supply was meant to
ensure the safety of drinking water for citizens, the local
government said.

Local authorities said they would provide citizens with
the reserve supplies of clean water for an hour every day.

"Currently, the government is taking emergency measures to
control the pollution to ensure the early resumption of water
supply," a municipal notice read.

"The government has set up a panel to investigate the
cause of the pollution," it said.

The city government offered an apology to its residents
for the inconvenience.
