Emergency services received the call at 5:10 pm (2110 GMT) to 201 Varick Street in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, a spokesman for the fire department told AFP.

One person died at the scene and a man taken to Lenox Hill Hospital in traumatic arrest, he said. The identities of the victims were not immediately clear.

Police confirmed that they were responding to an active incident, but gave no immediate further details.
