London: At least one person was killed and 30 others injured on Saturday in a massive 40-vehicle pile-up on a motorway in the UK due to foggy conditions.

The M40 motorway has been closed northbound between junction 9 at Bicester and junction 10 at Cherwell Valley services in Oxfordshire, south-east England.

It was foggy at the time of the "major collision" but it is too early to know the exact cause of the accident, a spokesperson said.

One person was killed and 30 others injured in the accident.

Police said the road would be closed "for a number of hours" and have warned motorists to avoid the area because of "heavy traffic congestion".

Work to relieve traffic stuck on the northbound carriageway is going on, police said.

Images from live traffic cameras showed miles of queues and fleets of emergency vehicles lining the road near the scene as a trickle of cars passed in the other direction.
