Over 1,000 tonnes of marijuana crops destroyed in Russia in 2010 Moscow: More than 1,000 tonnes of marijuana crops were destroyed in Russia this year, Federal Drug Control Service Viktor Ivanov said at the meeting of the service's Public Council.

"By destroying several hectares of crops, we prevented the selling of over 1,000 tonnes of marijuana on the market," he said yesterday, adding it was ten times larger than the amount of marijuana seized on the black market.

Assistance of local authorities and the public is vital for the suppression of narcotic drugs, Ivanov said.

Tyva, the Amur region, the Khabarovsk territory, the Primorye territory and Buryatia are the main areas growing drug crops in Russia, he said.
