Paraguay: 17 killed in violent land dispute

Paraguay`s President is sending the Army to resolve a deadly land dispute in a remote forest reserve.

Asuncion: Paraguay`s President is sending the Army to resolve a deadly land dispute in a remote forest reserve.

Gunbattles continue in the forest after police tried to evict squatters from the reserve and the landless peasants fired back. Officials say seven officers and 10 squatters have been killed. At least 27 other police officers have been injured.

President Fernando Lugo says the Army has his support to put an end to the violence.

The reserve is part of a vast ranch owned by a political opponent of Lugo`s, Blas Riquelme. Activists say Riquelme acquired the land from the state decades ago and should put it to use for land reform.
