Paraguay president`s son faces assault charges in US

Juan Pablo Cartes, oldest son of Paraguay President Horacio Cartes, was freed on bail in the United States after a weekend arrest for assault, a prison spokesman said on Monday.

Miami: Juan Pablo Cartes, oldest son of Paraguay President Horacio Cartes, was freed on bail in the United States after a weekend arrest for assault, a prison spokesman said on Monday.

Cartes was released "Sunday afternoon after paying USD 15,000" bail, said a spokesman for Miami`s Turner Guilford Knight jail.

The 29-year-old was arrested in Bal Harbour, just north of Miami Beach, last morning and must appear in court within three to six weeks, the spokesman said.

The Paraguayan president`s son lives in Miami where he is a student, according to local media reports.

Few details are known so far about the fight that led to his arrest.
An uncle of President Cartes is also facing criminal charges -- for drug trafficking in Uruguay.

Juan Domingo Viveros Cartes was arrested July 29, when he was caught flying a Cessna 210 plane registered to Paraguay without proper permission in northern Uruguay. He was intercepted by the Uruguayan Air Force and forced to land. His trial began last week.

The 66-year old was convicted of the drug trafficking in Brazil in 2001 and sentenced to 17 years in jail, but released after six to complete his sentence under house arrest in Paraguay.
