Paris: A gangland killing in an
ethnically-mixed neighbourhood of Paris left two dead and
three wounded, police said on Tuesday, adding that such violence
was a rarity in the French capital.

The two men died from gunshot wounds overnight after
being "sprayed by automatic gunfire" on a street in the 18th
arrondissement in the north of Paris, a police spokesman said.
Three others were wounded, one of whom was listed in
serious condition.

Police later found a charred car in a Paris suburb
that they believe may have been the attackers` getaway
vehicle.

The killings occurred on the night of the
well-attended Fete de la Musique street festival in Paris, but
police said there was no link to the event.
"Had it happened a few minutes earlier, there could
have been a carnage," said a police official, adding that the
streets near the crime scene were filled with people who had
just been to a concert.

Police sources noted that gangland-style hits rarely
occur in Paris and an investigation has been opened to explain
the violence in the mostly residential district that includes
a lively north African quarter.
