Washington: Former US secretary of state Colin Powell says he sees improvements in the US relationship with China and is pronouncing the recent state visit by China`s President a success for both countries.
But Powell says it is naïve to expect China to quickly embrace western values.
Powell said on Sunday that China has come a long way in the past 40 years but that the US can`t demand Chinese leaders to, as he put it, "turn on a dime" and enact broad economic and political reforms while battling rampant poverty.
The retired general and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff stressed that relations between the world`s two largest economies will have their ups and downs.
Powell appeared on CNN`s ‘State of the Union’.
