Dubai: Qatar on Sunday recognised Libya`s
opposition national council as the "sole legitimate
representative" of the people of that country, more than two
weeks after France became the first State to do so.
"...this recognition stems from the conviction that the
(Transitional National) Council, including all of its
representatives in various areas in Libya, has practically
become the representative of Libya and its people," the
state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) quoted a Foreign Ministry
official as saying.
The official said the State of Qatar has recognised the
rebels` council as the "sole legitimate representative" of
the people of that country, in view of acceptance attached to
it by the Libyans.
Qatar became the second county to recognise the opposition
council of Libya after France.
