London: The Queen on Friday joined families and politicians for a service of remembrance to honour British service personnel who fought and died during the war in Iraq.
Britain`s combat operations in Iraq formally ended on April 30, six years after joining the US-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein in March 2003.

During that time, 179 British servicemen and women were killed.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have joined veterans and families of some of those who lost their lives for the service at St Paul`s Cathedral.

"This service will provide an opportunity to remember the enormous contribution made by some 120,000 members of the UK Armed Forces and their civilian colleagues who have served in Iraq over six years," Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said earlier.

"In particular, it will be a time to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by those who died and who contributed to the greater peace and stability that exists in Iraq today."
