‘Rebels leading Libyans to live life of refugees’

Media reports have suggested that sustained automatic gunfire and a series of explosions were heard in Tripoli overnight.

Tripoli: Libyan dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has condemned the rebels as traitors and "vermin" who are tearing Libya apart, and leading the citizens to live a life like “refugees.”

"Libyans wanted to enjoy a peaceful Ramadan. Instead they have been made into refugees. What are we? Palestinians?" an American newspaper quoted Gaddafi, as saying.

Meanwhile, Libyan rebels have claimed that they have reached a final stage of the battle to overthrow Gaddafi.

Abdel Hafiz Ghoga, vice-chairman of the Benghazi-based rebel National Transitional Council (NTC), said that "the zero hour has started" and rebels in Tripoli have risen up in coordination with the NTC.

"We planned this operation with NATO, our Arab associates and our rebel fighters in Tripoli with commanders in Benghazi," he added.

Media reports have suggested that sustained automatic gunfire and a series of explosions were heard in Tripoli overnight, indicating that Gaddafi`s 41-year rule is coming to an end.

There are speculations that Gaddafi had fled the country, but those reports could not be confirmed.

However, Gaddafi`s officials insisted early Sunday that the revolts had been crushed, a few hours after it began.
