Bucharest: Romanian mayor Klaus Iohannis claimed a surprise win over Prime Minister Victor Ponta in an unexpectedly close presidential runoff Sunday, after early exit polls put the outcome on a knife edge.

"We`ve won!" the 55-year-old liberal and ethnic German Iohannis wrote on his Facebook page shortly after Ponta, who had been widely tipped to win, conceded defeat and congratulated his conservate opponent.
