Rural migrant labourers in China to rise 3mn every year

The number of rural labourers migrating to Chinese cities is expected to rise by 3 million per year.

Beijing: The number of rural labourers
migrating to Chinese cities is expected to rise by 3 million
per year, after it clocked 211 million last year, burdening
the nation`s already clogged urban centres, state survey said on Sunday.

`The 2010 Report on the Development of China`s Floating
Population` said that the migrant work force could rise to 350
million by 2050, giving tizzies to industries with their ever
increasing demands.

The report said although the number of long-distance
migrants decreased in 2009 as a result of weak labour demand
caused by the global financial crisis, the long-term overall
tendency of people moving to eastern coastal areas and key
traffic hubs would not change.

However, the rate of migration is expected to decline by
3 million in coming years after it hovered around six million
mark during previous years, said the survey conducted by
National Population and Family Planning Commission.

The official projection of the size of Chinese migrant
work force, whose numbers remained nebulous so far, comes when
the Dragon is experiencing a series of labour strikes for the
first time after it opened up it economy, mostly by the
migrants who began asserting themselves with demands for
higher wages.

Labour strikes in different plants, including that of
Honda and Toyota, made many foreign firms in China to raise
salaries of their workforce for the first time in years, which
in turn could affect its cheap export goods.

Adding to Chinese woes, the ever increasing migrant
population in pearl delta - highly industrialised coastal
areas - is giving tough time to the provincial governments,
forcing them to reform its management and service policies for
the migrant population in order to ensure their livelihood,
state owned Xinhua news agency reported.
